Description

The renovation of the historic 50 Hurt Building is a landmark project within Cornerstone’s portfolio. The 104-year-old structure was in need of modernization and Cornerstone rose to the challenge. The pre-construction phase involved meticulous investigation of the building’s historic conditions and finishes, particularly in the main lobby and common areas. Cornerstone’s deep understanding of the building’s history proved invaluable as they collaborated with designers and engineers to honor the architect’s vision while respecting the structure’s heritage. The occupied nature of the building demanded strategic planning, including temporary rerouting of tenant entries and working with local authorities to preserve exposed century-old column details.

The renovation breathed new life into multiple areas of the building while carefully preserving its historic charm. The lobby underwent a dramatic transformation, featuring reworked plaster ceilings and an eye-catching open-to-structure floating cloud element. Twelve floors of common areas received updates, including the painstaking removal and restoration of original Tate marble floors. Elevator lobbies, corridors, and lighting systems were upgraded throughout. A standout achievement was the conversion of the long-vacant 18th floor into a modern amenities space, complete with a fitness center, ADA-accessible shower facilities, and a state-of-the-art conference center capable of hosting up to 180 people. The addition of a 24/7 supplemental HVAC system for the fitness center and the versatile conference spaces with Modernfold Operable Wall Partitions demonstrate how cutting-edge amenities can be seamlessly integrated into a historic structure.
This project exemplifies Cornerstone’s expertise in blending modern functionality with historic preservation. The revitalized 50 Hurt Building now stands as a testament to thoughtful, history-conscious urban renewal, ready to serve its tenants for generations to come.
